This is the process from story board to coloured Layouts . All the drawing is done by me and the colour is by a friend of mine called Matt Horan.

A new concept of the sandman

This is a new idea for "The Sandman" . I was advised that I should rethink my approach my design for this film so thats what i'm working on now. I think i'm going to use Roman Polanskis Oliver Twist for some referance. Hope you like it.

The story

• 
  A little boy called Milo goes to sleep tired and cold. He’s afraid of the shadows in the room. He hides behind his blanket and hugs one of his many teddies for protection like he always does every night till he falls asleep into a dream land.
  o The sandman is waiting out side the boy's house in the town
  o The sandman enters the room
  o The boy is afraid of the shadows coming over him
  o As the sandman steps into the room but puts his foot on a squeaky toy.
  o He gets a shock cause he can’t let the boy see him
  o He flies behind his magic cloak and disappears. The kid, startled, gets up but doesn’t see anything in the room. He goes back to bed
  o The sandman reappears in the room
  o Then the sandman sprinkles his sleeping dust on the child.

The child goes into the dream world

o The child runs around his world having the time of his life
o There is an alarm sound the child comes out of his dream to find that he has fallen out of bed.

The child gets up, picks up the teddy on the floor and looks at it. Then he turns to look out the window
It's day time now.

This is one of the concept stills that i'm showing next week in college.This is the look i want for the sequence.The model of the character hasn't been decided yet but i hope you like it any ways.



The bottom is touch up of the previous drawing . I think this is much better and has more depth.

Story

Well its done I've finally worked out the story and the style. This is the first movie i've made that I feel I really work on these two element . Its looking pretty exciting and I can't wait to crack into it and start production. I have a deadline in 5 weeks to have all the concept ,writen work, story board,model sheets and animatic as well as the majorite of the layouts. Thats a lot of work to do.

Then I get to Animate. yeah!

Milo concept

A drawing inspired by a pose i saw in the jungle book and then changed completly to make this one . If you ever get stuck for a pose for a character some times its nice to steal a couple of poses from other people and then make them your own. This also i find helps you loosen up and create poses that you wouldn't think of before while getting you away from drawing the same 6 poses that you are comfortable with anyway.

4th year final film

Synopsis

The short opens with a city setting(somewhere between Amsterdam and Annecy.) , Its night time . The stars and a half moon are giving a beautiful light to the buildings. The sandman enters by jumping into screen and landing on roof tops and jumping off them again. As the sandman is moving a trail of magical dust follow him. Cuts to a boy trying to get to sleep in a bed.. The sand man is jumping over more roof tops. The sandman lands into a bedroom . There is a child trying to get to sleep . The sandman walks across the room towards the child. The sandman steps on a toy or an instrument or something which makes an noise. The child unaware of anyone in the room turns around to see what caused the noise . The sandman disappears into his cloak and vanishes before the child can see him. The child turn back around and try to get back to sleep. The sandman reappears and spreads his magic dust on the child.
The child slips off into a dream land with explosions of color synced up to music while he is flying though the air. The boy come's out of his dream to find the sand man has gone . He looks out his window and see nothing but the towns buildings then he lays back down in his bed .

Treatment

A traditional hand drawn animated film, with background styling similar to 101 Dalmations. A use of flash , Aftereffects,Photoshop, Illustrator and Premier will be used also to animate and composite. The animation will be musically driven meaning that the it will be synced before hand

Music

The music at the beginning will be use to created atmosphere and convey the characters emotions and feels. While once the child character slips into his dream sequence the music will be syncopated to the animation of explosions of color . An example is in rataouile where one of the rats eats the food and the background fades away and there is color explosions to the beats of music.

The reason for this blog

This blog is being set up to show people the progression of my 4th year film. The working title so far is dreamer and the basic plot is about the sandman coming into a little boys room and putting him into a dream world . The piece is a music based ,by which i mean that the animation and shot cuts will all be synced to music . The film will be made either by tradional hand drawn or hand drawn into flash . There is two characters and the duration will be about 40secs to 1 min 15
. The aim is to keep it as short as possible in order to get the best animation on screen that i can.
I will put up example of work as they get done .
